After School Clubs – Fall 2024

Who:

The Pine Spring After School Clubs are open to Pine Spring students in Grades 1 – 6. Kindergarten students will be eligible in the Spring. Please refer to the brochure for each club description and the appropriate age range.

When:

Each club is assigned a specific day, Tuesday-Thursday, 3:45-4:45 pm. All Pine Spring Clubs start the week of October 7 and finish by December 12. Clubs will not meet on school holidays or early release days. Each club allows for one make-up in case of inclement weather or emergency cancellation.

Where:

Club members will be escorted to their club location in the school.

Fees:

$75-$95. If your child is interested in a club, please register. The PTA fundraises to subsidize the cost of clubs for all students ($150-$200 at neighboring schools). If you would like to be considered for partial or full scholarship for the club fee, please contact Principal Yacubovich at neyacubovich@fcps.edu or Iris Benitez at idbenitez@fcps.edu.

laughter and love in people’s hearts through
the arts and creative expression.

Soccer Academy
(Tu, G3-6)

Soccer Academy is based on training methods and techniques from professional academies in the
United Kingdom.

Each player will have their own ball for the majority of the class to work on drills, moves and skills.

Class finishes with small-sided scrimmages, such as 1v1 or 2v2, to put the technique we worked on throughout the class into practice!

Karen has 28 years’
experience teaching children’s PE, Art and Music classes and camps for Fairfax County Parks & Recreation and Abrakadoodle. She developed program curricula and served as camp counselor and an assistant director. She is currently a FCPS special education para in Burke.

Chess Club

Magnus Chess Academy

Fun is the name of the game…

…but Magnus Chess Academy also sneaks in a bit of critical thinking, sportsmanship, and patience into chess! Each week students of all levels do a fun but challenging lesson with one of our great coaches from our world class curriculum followed by practice games against other students in the class.

Join the 100,000 (and counting!) kids who’ve learned chess with the official academy of 5x world champion Magnus Carlsen.

This in-person club includes online extras like practice tournaments, Chesskid Gold membership ($49 value) and a bonus lesson with Magnus or Judit Polgar, the best female chess player ever!

Ukulele Club (Th, G3-6)

Week 2: playing position; strumming & picking
Week 3: finger exercises; strings & the musical alphabet
Week 4: musical symbols; tuning; simple chords
Week 5: fundamental rhythmic concepts; metronome
Week 6: full strumming; C and E strings; full songs
Week 7: 2-finger chords; chord progression
Week 8: 3-finger chords

Club Leader Scott Ricker is a multi-instrumentalist and has been playing for 20

years. He studied music and psychology at
Temple University, and has taught professionally
at School of Rock and on a private basis. His
philosophy is that music is a universal language,
one of the most effective vehicles we have for
connection, empathy, and self-expression.

club. Students not picked through the lottery will be added to a waitlist.
